North Carolina, Winston Salem
Some Blake Time!!
Our main purpose in visiting Winston-Salem was to see our youngest, Blake, who is attending the University of North Carolina School of the Arts for filmmaking. Every May, they screen the films the students have made during the school year. We set our schedule so we could be there and join in on the fun. We got to see a couple dozen films from the first- and second-year students, and were, for the most part, very impressed by what we saw. (Blake’s films were, objectively speaking, the best! 😊) While in WS, we like to visit some of our favorite food establishments and check out some of the sights. Here are a few attractions worth visiting if you are ever in the area.
A few images from our time with Blake.
Indoor Pool at Reynolda house.
Reynolda House
The Reynolda House Museum of American Art was originally the home of R.J. Reynolds, owner of one of the largest tobacco companies in the country. The home featured many architectural innovations and is still filled with a plethora of historical objects. Make sure you check out the impressive garden while you are there. Today, the estate has been transformed into a village that includes a variety of shops, restaurants, gardens, and walking trails. There is much to do while you are there.
The Graylyn Estate & Hotel
Graylyn Estate & Hotel
Across the street, you will find the Graylyn Estate & Hotel. This home was owned by Bowman and Nathalie Gray. Bowman was a long-time CEO and Chairman of the Board for R.J. Reynolds. If visiting the area, it’s a beautiful place to stay. Even if you don’t stay there, the public is able to walk the grounds and the first floor of the house. As an interior designer, Christina definitely enjoyed the architecture and impressive craftsmanship.
Winston-Salem has quite a bit of green space and parks. This trip, we visited Quarry Park. As the name suggests, this is a park built around an abandoned quarry. Simply put, it is stunning. The Quarry is now filled with crystal clear blue water that is more than 180 feet deep. It is quite the focal point for the park.
183 feet deep. The water was crystal clear. Just Stunning.
